What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel, alternatively referred to as chemexfoliation or derma peeling, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of your skin. During this treatment, a chemical solution is carefully applied to your skin’s surface, inducing controlled injury to its layers.

As a result, the outermost layers of the skin gradually peel away, unveiling a rejuvenated complexion beneath. Typically, the newly revealed skin appears smoother, with diminished lines and wrinkles, a more uniform colour tone, and increased brightness.

Chemical peels are utilized to address specific skin concerns or to refine one’s appearance by enhancing skin tone and texture. Primarily performed on the face, neck, or hands, chemical peels can effectively mitigate or improve various skin issues, including:

  • Fine lines around the eyes or mouth, as well as wrinkles stemming from sun exposure, ageing, or genetic factors.
  • Certain forms of acne.
  • Minor scarring.
  • Sunspots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, and uneven skin pigmentation.
  • Precancerous patches are known as actinic keratosis.
  • Rough patches, scaly skin, and a lacklustre complexion.
  • Hyperpigmented areas like melasma.

Benefits of a Chemical Peel

Exfoliation

Chemical peels remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, increasing cell turnover and revealing fresher, smoother skin beneath.

Improved Skin Texture

By eliminating the top layer of damaged skin, chemical peels can enhance skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and rough spots.

Acne Treatment

Chemical peels can help to clear clogged pores and lessen the appearance of acne by eliminating dead skin cells and excess oil.

Reduction of Hyperpigmentation

Chemical peels can remove dark spots, freckles, and other types of hyperpigmentation by exfoliating the skin and encouraging the formation of new, evenly pigmented skin cells.

Improved Product Absorption

By removing the top layer of dead skin cells, chemical peels can allow skincare products to penetrate more effectively, enhancing their efficacy.

What to Expect During a Chemical Peel Treatment:

Undergoing a chemical peel facial can be an invigorating experience aimed at revitalizing your skin’s appearance. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you can typically expect during a chemical peel facial:

Consultation

Before the facial, you’ll have a consultation with a Bella Viso. During this consultation, you’ll discuss your skin concerns, goals, and any relevant medical history. The esthetician will assess your skin type, sensitivity, and suitability for a chemical peel.

Preparation

Your esthetician will begin by cleansing your skin thoroughly to remove any makeup, oils, or impurities. This step ensures that the chemical peel solution can penetrate the skin effectively. Your Bella Viso esthetician may perform a detailed analysis of your skin to identify specific concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, or uneven texture.

This analysis helps determine the most appropriate type and strength of chemical peel for your skin’s needs. In some cases, especially if you have sensitive skin or are trying a new peel solution, a patch test may be performed on a small area of your skin to assess how your skin reacts to the chemical solution.

Treatment

Application of chemical peel solution: Once your skin is prepped, the chemical peel solution will be applied to your skin using a brush, sponge, or cotton pad. The solution may contain various types of acids, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid, depending on your skin type and concerns.

During the application of the chemical peel solution, you may experience a tingling or warming sensation on the skin. This is normal and is typically temporary. If you experience any discomfort, be sure to communicate with your esthetician.

Bella Viso will closely monitor your skin’s response to the chemical peel solution, observing for any signs of adverse reactions or discomfort. Depending on the type of chemical peel used, a neutralizing solution may be applied to stop the chemical reaction on the skin. Not all chemical peels require neutralization, as some are self-neutralizing.

After the peel solution has been applied and neutralized, if necessary, your skin will be treated with soothing products to calm and hydrate the skin. These may include a gentle moisturizer or a cooling mask.

Post-Treatment Care

Bella Viso will provide you with specific instructions for post-peel care, including how to cleanse and moisturize your skin, as well as any products to avoid in the days following the facial. It’s essential to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and maximize the results of your chemical peel facial.

Depending on your skin’s response and your desired outcomes, your Bella Viso esthetician may recommend a series of chemical peel facials spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results. They may also suggest complementary skincare treatments or products to enhance and maintain your skin’s health and appearance.
