What are Dark Spots?

Dark spots on the skin, also known as hyperpigmentation or brown spots, are a common skin issue that anyone can have. They happen because of an overproduction of melanin, sun exposure, hormones, or getting older, and can make your skin look less bright. Depending on the cause, people may call some types of dark spots on the skin age spots or sunspots. These spots can vary in size and amount from person to person.

To remove dark spots, use skincare products with ingredients that help fade them. Also, to stop new dark spots or make existing ones darker, use sunscreen, wear protective clothes, and stay in the shade when the sun is strongest.

Areas Where Dark Spots Can Develop

Neurotoxin procedure (commonly known as Botox injection) involves the injection of neurotoxins such as Botulinum Toxin Type A which is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

In medicine, it is used to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. When injected into specific muscles, these neurotoxins block nerve signals, causing the muscles to relax and smoothing out wrinkles in the overlying skin.

It is commonly used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, providing a more fresh-looking skin. Additionally, neurotoxin procedures are also used to treat medical conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and muscle spasticity.

Currently there are various cosmetic neurotoxins on the market including well recognized brands such as Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® — that each contain the same active ingredient (BoNT-A) and are used to treat the same aesthetic concerns.

Dark spots can appear on any part of the body that is exposed to the sun or experiences skin trauma or inflammation. Major ones include:

• Face: Common areas for dark spots on the face include the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, chin, and around the eyes.
• Hands: The back of the hands is particularly susceptible to dark spots due to frequent sun exposure.
• Arms: Dark spots can appear on the arms, especially on the top of the shoulders and forearms.
• Shoulders and Back: Areas of the shoulders and back that are exposed to the sun may develop dark spots over time.
• Legs: Dark spots can also occur on the legs, particularly on the thighs and shins, where sun exposure is common.
• Chest and Décolletage: The chest area, including the décolletage, can develop dark spots, especially in individuals who frequently wear low-cut tops or expose this area to the sun.
