What Is Vascular Lesion Removal ?
Dye VL, or Dye-VL (Dye Variable Pulsed Light), is a type of laser treatment used for vascular lesion removal. It targets and coagulates blood vessels responsible for various vascular lesions such as spider veins, broken capillaries, hemangiomas, and port wine stains.

Preparation
Before beginning a dye VL (vascular lesion) removal treatment, the therapist typically cleanses the skin thoroughly, applies a topical anesthetic cream if necessary, protects the eyes with goggles or shields, discusses the procedure and aftercare with the patient, and may perform a patch test.
Treatment
For dye VL to function, it must generate strong light bursts at particular wavelengths, which the blood vessels’ hemoglobin absorbs. The heat produced by this absorption makes the targeted blood vessels thicken and finally absorbed by the body, which causes the vascular lesions to disappear or fade.
Post-Treatment Care
Patients may feel some discomfort during the Dye VL treatment, which is commonly described as a snapping or stinging sensation, although it is usually tolerable.
Temporary redness, swelling, and bruising may occur following the procedure, although these adverse effects usually subside within a few days.
The full effects of the treatment may take several weeks or months to manifest as the body gradually removes the treated blood vessels.

Pre-treatment Care
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Stay away from excessive sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your treatment. Sunburned or tanned skin can make the procedure riskier and less effective
- Stop Tanning Products: Refrain from using self-tanning products or getting spray tans for at least 2 weeks before your treatment. These products can interfere with the treatment’s effectiveness and increase the risk of complications
- No use of Accutane/Isotretinoin within the past 6 months
- Do not wax, bleach, tweeze, or use other hair removal creams on treatment areas for at least 2 weeks before the treatment
- Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, micro-needling and other laser skin treatments should be avoided 14 days before treatment
- Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin, Retinols, AHAs/BHAs, Glycolic acids, etc at least 3 days before treatment.
Post-treatment Care
- Expect your skin to appear pink (resembling mild sunburn) for a few hours after treatment
- It is normal for pigmented lesions to become darker and begin crusting and flaking. These may take up to 10 days to disappear. It is important to not pick at the lesions to prevent the risk of scarring
- Bruising, although rare, may occur in some individuals and may last up to 2 weeks
- The sessions are designed to provide no downtime however, occasionally you may find that your cheeks and under-eye areas are slightly puffy after treatment. You may use cold compresses (5 minutes on and 10 minutes off) several times an hour to help ease both redness and swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated for the first night will also help decrease any swelling you may experience
- Your skin may be temperature sensitive for several days after treatment, avoid high-heat environments such as saunas, steam rooms, etc.
- Using a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 or higher is critical when receiving laser treatments and is recommended ongoing for maintenance
- Blistering and crusting are rare; however, if these do occur, a thin layer of over-the-counter antibiotic ointment, such as Polysporin, can be applied 2-3 times a day for 3 days. Please call us if you experience this uncommon reaction
- Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin color) can occur in some skin types. Please call us if you experience this uncommon reaction
- Use only mild cleansers and moisturizers on the treatment area
- Avoid harsh topical products such as retinoids and glycolic acid products for at least 3-4 days post-treatment
- Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area and use a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen of SPF 30+ daily
- It is important to adhere to the treatment interval recommended by your practitioner to ensure optimal results.
